Oh I don't know how I have missed this thread until now!
I absolutely LOVE what you are doing with this space!
I have seen some thouroghly stunning "courtyard" gardens. Container plants arranged in a paved, enclosed area can be so charming, evoking the small lovely spaces that I adore in places like Savannah, Charleston, and New Orleans.
It's already wonderful, Tweety, and it'll just get better as you continue developing it.

Oh yeah! GRRRR! I know about slugs, ick! I hate to use toxins, because I want other wildlife to be safe in my garden, but there are some other things worth trying - I've used copper foil strips around the rims of some of my orchid pots, it causes electrolysis, delivering a shock that discourages the slimey boogers. I've also used (as suggested in the quote below) diatomaceous earth with success. You can find it at stores that cater to people with larger aquariums, aquarists ( is that even a real word??) use it as a filtering product. Just sprinkle it as a top layer in potted plants, it's sharp (by slug and snail standards) and causes abrasion that they hate. quoting URI factsheet: - Slugs avoid crawling over anything dry, dusty or scratchy, such as lime, road dust, diatomaceous earth, cinders, coarse sawdust, gravel or sand. Secretion of enough mucus to free themselves from these materials soon exhausts them and they die. A border of any of these inert materials, therefore, helps control slugs.
