Help - Bird of Paradise - 2007/10/21 13:20 new to the forum and new to plants
recently bought a bird of paradise plant which has recently flowered, to which the flowers are now dieing off. the plant is kept in doors

a few things i've noticed is that the flowers seem to be covered in small black/brown insects, which the majority don't seem to move at all, can any one tell me what these are, where they might of come from and how to get rid of these.

secondly with the flowers wilting what do i do with them. do i just leave then cut them off or what
and while on the subject of pruning, i can't find any information on when or how to do it.

and lastly there are some small brown blemishes on a couple of the leaves and a few holes (not big one's or many) which i'd thought i'd mention

any help would be much appreciated.

regards david

Help - Bird of Paradise - 2007/10/31 03:34 The insects might be aphids, in which case an aplication of Safer soap insecticide, Raid House and Garden Spray (green can), or even a 1 to 10 solution of dish detergent will suffice. A picture would be useful for positive identification.
The expiring blossoms need to be removed. The best way is to grasp the base of the stem cluster of the whole plant and pull the flower with the stem out. Barring this, cutting the stem as low as possible will do.
The holes and blemishes sound like slugs or snails. if these cannot be located, a common metaldehyde bait will eradicate them. Note: try to keep the bait pellets as far from the plant within the planter as possible. The vermin tend to roam at night and will be attracted even at small distances.
Hope this helps
