Orchids - 2007/09/09 09:20 Nice initiative, Kihalani Does this orchid spread a vanilla fragrance as well?

Unfortunately I don't own photos of the orchids I owned or have seen (haven't been 'into' photography until lately) - but at the following link you will find photos of orchids I see on a regular basis here in Israel:

Re:Orchids - 2007/11/17 08:05 Stunning orchids, Kihalani!

Oh, how I wish that I lived in a warmer climate,
where my poor orchids could live outside all year long.

They are huddled inside my glasshouse here in N.Carolina,
eagerly waiting for spring and summer to return.

Re:Orchids - 2007/11/18 17:38 You must have green fingers Zuzu... That is also a beautiful one. The speckles and the total coloring besides the beautiful, very healthy looking, shape of the flower is very attractive (cheerful I would say )

Re:Orchids - 2007/12/15 15:50 Thank you, Zwaluw!
I wish I lived in the tropics,
but my glasshouse is the best I can do, for now.

I have a lot of orchids crammed in there,
they help to keep my spirits up through the winter months.

Re:Orchids - 2007/12/19 19:59 Great to see you are still popping back in, Kihalani -
even if it can only be in those rare spare moments, for now.

It sounds like you have a great situation,
with some nice breaks between the seasons when work is slammin'.

YUMMY!! That catt is a real "glamour kitty"!
Ya just gotta love those "floofy" ones -
does she smell as lovely as she looks?

zuzu . . . Love to get some details on your temperature and humidity control systems.
It's a real seat-of-the-pants operation, K,
the structure is only 12x12, so every"body" in there gets the same
conditions . . . like it or not . . . and some of 'em don't like it much.

The temps can swing broadly, especially in the winter months.
It can rise to 85°+(F) on a sunny day (there is a fan and a vent which helps).
And, on a very cold night, it can drop to about 45°
( we usually try to keep it at about 50°, using an oil-filled, electric radiator for supplemental heat.).

On the moisture side -
We installed a misting system, and at present,
I believe it is set to run for about 10 minutes every 3rd morning.
But there is additional ambient humidity, due to all of the other plants,
which are sharing the space (mostly beneath the shelves) -
those I water by hand, on an as-needed basis.

Here are a couple of pix from Dec 1st:

Re:Orchids - 2007/12/21 15:59 I'm feeing overwhelmed and humbled by those great photos of those great plants. I wish I could add some 'great' photos of my own, alas.... perhaps next year, when I will get back into 'it (if circumstances permit)

Re:Orchids - 2007/12/25 03:04 Quite the set up zuzu and are those anthurium I see there? Looks like a type we call "Mickey Mouse".

Sorry to be missing in action Zwaluw
I'll be around more often, but looks like zuzu has a whole lot of expertise to share

Here is a holiday greeting for everyone:
