Re:PRUNING STRELIZIA NIGRENS - 2011/02/06 18:21
Hi, and welcome.
I am only aware of 5 species of Strelitzia * Strelitzia alba (syn. S. augusta) * Strelitzia caudata * Strelitzia nicolai - commonly called the Giant Bird of Paradise (this one naturally grows to as much as 30 feet tall) * Strelitzia reginae (syn. S. parvifolia) * Strelitzia juncea) So I must begin by saying that I am not specifically familiar with your S. nigrens. However, assuming that your plant is like other species of the genera, it's growing height is probably genetically determined, which would make efforts to control it's ultimate height extremely challenging, to say the least. Most Bird of Paradise plants are only pruned to maintain their appearance and basal spread, rather than to control how tall they grow. (There is a video of that sort of pruning shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnrX9Hu8Itw)
With that said, Bird of Paradise plants tend to all grow from a basal core, so I suppose that under the right circumstances, one might be able to prune their overly tall plant down (perhaps nearly to the base) and let new growth begin, thereby "starting over" with the "pup plant", which would be a smaller, more manageable plant - at least until it gains more maturity again. If your plant already has some smaller "pups" or plantlets growing around the overly tall "parent plant", then removing the over-sized plant might be an option for you.
I hope that helps.
