Help! Bird of Paradise parasites - 2007/02/02 11:16 We have an indoor Bird of Paradise plant about five feet tall. We gotten it only couple of months ago. Just couple of days ago i've noticed a small segmented worm under the plant. The worm is about half an inch long of light brown color. I looked closely in the soil & noticed tens of much smaler worms like this one. Whitiush to brownish color, only segmented but no legs that i could see. The plant also has one suspicious black hole on one of the branches. Plus some leafs have no less suspicious holes through them. Not to many though. Only 3 or 4 about half an inch to quarter of an inch in diameter. These holes possiblly came with the plant. I'm no gardening expert, but i think that something could be slightly living inside the stems that is enthusiastically damaging the plant. And those worms could come from the larvae as we had a problem with tiny flies in the fall. Can anybody recommend what to do with these worms or holes in the leaves?

I believe that if you've got more than 2-3 worms (and it seems you do) you should start using pesticides...

Re:Help! Bird of Paradise parasites - 2007/03/18 13:43 Hi there,
I've just this minute registered here as a result of Mitch's invitation posted to me on 09/Dec and which I've only now acted upon. My apologies Mitch! Will get back to you. Anyway. . . this post.

You have chaffer grubs and they are evil little blighters. They are the evil larval form of a fairly harmless insect and they will chew through all your roots, not just in Strelitzia, but any root they like - especially Fuchsias. Often victims only discover the problem when they tip the dead plant out and find it has no roots!

Tip the plant out of it's pot right now and go through the soil squishing any grubs you find. Then isolate it, and do exactly the same with its neighbours. Hopefully one plant is affected, but unlikely.

The organic solution involves a tiny worm which eats the larvae alive, problem is, in my experience the evil larvae don't mind the cold whereas the tiny worm just doesn't like temps below 10C, which make it ineffective at this time.

The non-organic solution is to treat the compost with either a liquid or tiny granular killer. The liquid is freely available but has a limited lifespan as it's diluted with watering. The granular form lasts up to two years or more but is prohibitively expensive here in the UK.

Re:Help! Bird of Paradise parasites - 2007/03/18 16:46 This sounds like great efficient advise. I hope he was in time, since a month has passed and I don't know much about wurms, but hope they didn't spread too much in the meanwhile....
