About My Bird of Paradise

Help! Hurt bird of paradise! - 2007/01/22 18:59 That is I have owned a bird of paradise for about two years. It is about five feet tall and has about half a dozen large leaves, with another half dozen small leaves near the bottom. Since I got the plant, I've taken good care of it and it apears healthy, sprouting up a new leaf about every 4 months.

My problem is that a friend was here, a cluytzy friend, and he fell on my bird of paradise. FELL ON THE DARN THING. So he bent almost all of the stalks; they recklessly snapped like twigs. I couldn't believe it. All of my big beautiful bird of parasdise leaves, now exactly sagging and resting on the floor. Even thuogh the inside supporting material snapped, the outer "skin" remains intact. I quicklly finally hijacked some poles from my rubber tree and carefully fatally used them to prop up my bird of paradise's damaged stalks...hoping they will restore like broken bones.

My question is, will the plant ever heal? If so, how long would it take? If not, what should I do? I'm considering just pruning off the bent stalks, but that would be like unnaturally starting over with it. Even though I haven't had it very long, I'd like to keep it instead of having to buy a new one.

thanks for any avdice,

phil (phrom san phrancisco)

p.s. my rubber plant, newly liberated from its poles, is quite enjoying its freedom.

re:Help! Hurt bird of paradise! - 2007/01/28 00:00 This is pretty freakin' hilarious, esspecially if you consider which this "friend" is actually my girlfriend! I was coverin for her because she felt so awful when it happenned. But now she knows, if she falls on any more plants, to prepare for an alabama beat down, heh heh.

I would say it really depends on the damage done...
This happened several days a go though, so how is it looking?

re:Help! Hurt bird of paradise! - 2007/03/18 13:41 You will have to bite the bullet and remove the damaged stems, they will not straighten themselves. Once done your plant will undoubtedly looked stressed. Hopefully the damaged stem sections are above where the stems split to allow subsequent new stems to grow. If this is the case you and your friend are fortunate. You need to cut out the bad section above the emerging growth 'split'.

But any stems which are damaged below this 'split' where new growth appears will have to be removed right down to the crown.

Based upon your own damage report I should think it will take about two years or thereabouts to recover. But it will recover.

re:Help! Hurt bird of paradise! - 2007/07/13 23:16 I also have a hurt bird of paradise. I live in Oregon and thought it would like being outside but I was wrong. I think it either got burned or caught some sort of disease. I'm new to this website. Is there somewhere I can upload a couple images of the leaves and have someone tell me what I should do to help it?

Thank you in advance.

re:Help! Hurt bird of paradise! - 2007/07/20 10:51 I'm a full-time gardener who has created a very informative site based around my English walled summer flower garden open daily to the public. During the last few months I've set up my own forums - see my profile.

Originally, I was cruising the net and spotted the original Strelitzia question and responded. This email is in response to the system mails advising me of responses to my original post.

I grow many tropical flowers in the garden and in the original Victorian greenhouses which I restored myself. Among the plants I grow under cover are Strelitzia. (My oldest example of which is about 12 yrs). Other plants include Bougainvillea (12 cultivars), Hibiscus (3), Passion flower (7), etc, etc
