Bird Of Paradise - 2010/04/24 06:54
Hi Babs, keep the faith and don't give up on your bird. It sounds like you've done well by her so far. If the root mass is still healthy then you will probably begin to see some signs of new growth within the next month or 2.
I will say that I always noticed that my potted BOP flowered more profusely when it was somewhat rootbound, so I always delayed giving her a larger pot for as long as possible. Finally, last Sept she literally burst apart the large plastic tub that had contained her for the 2 previous years and I felt that I had no choice other than to put her into the ground. Hubby simply would not go along with the idea of finding a bigger container and purchasing a forklift to hoist the big beast in and out of the garage each winter. I knew it was a risk to put it in the ground up here in N.Carolina, and as fate would have it - we suffered the same awful winter that you all had. *sigh* We did manage to provide enough protection for "Big Birdie" to keep her alive and we even provided a bit of supplemental heat. But she looks like she's been through heck! She's a mere shadow of her former (massive) glory. In order to even try to cover her up before the first hard freezes, we had to cut away at least half of her foliage, and a good bit of what was left sustained frost damage - but she is hanging in there, and slowly producing new leaf shoots. So I'm keeping the faith as well.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us.
