Strelitzia Reginae Pruning, Please help. - 2010/03/30 19:13 Hello Everyone,

My name is Lewis and I recently bought a bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Reginae) and when it came one of the leafs was very brown so I done abit of research and found I needed to cut the the stalk back aswell as the leaf. I cut as down as I could but as soon as the air hit the bottom bit it became very brown, is this normal?

Should I put wax over the cut? I appreciate any answers on the situation. Many Thanks in advance.

Also the plant is indoors.

Regards,

Lewis

Re:Strelitzia Reginae Pruning, Please help. - 2010/03/31 01:41 Hi Lewis, and welcome.
I have never applied anything to the cut surfaces of my Bird of Paradise, and to be very honest, I've never even noticed whether the cut surfaces darken, but it wouldn't worry me at all if they did.

I think that it sounds like normal oxidation, just the same way that a cut apple will turn brown after a little while.
Your plant should be just fine, and I hope that you get much enjoyment from it.

Oh, another thought - since your plant is potted (and I kept mine potted for many years),
it has been my experience that S.reginae blooms better if it remains slightly root-bound, so don't be too generous with the pot size.

Re:Strelitzia Reginae Pruning, Please help. - 2010/04/07 23:15 Thanks ZUZU all your help is very much appreciated, I am always seeking new ways to keep my plants happy.

The plant is in a reasonable sized pot and seems to be loving it, recently new growth seems to be occurring. I'm very happy!!

Kindest Regards,
