Need help with bird of paradise!!! Is it dead? - 2009/11/14 00:32 http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii120/lilashc88/111209183034.jpg

Its a bird of paradise I believe. I would have thrown it away months ago if it didnt have sentimental value(my aunt gave it me 6yrs ago). Problems started after a fertilizer ruined it. Now the main stem is rotted, and in the pic is not standing upright anymore, instead is bent over backward. There are two smaller stems on either side that don't seem to be affected. There are no leaves.

I did rinse the roots and repotted in a cactus soil/perlite. I only water every 10days or so and have had it in the shade every since the fertilizer burn.

Is it too late...what else can I do? I have pretty much had it with this plant.

Hi brownthumb, and welcome ... sorry that your plant is in crisis.

If I were in your shoes, and if the plant was sentimental to me,
then I guess that I'd keep trying until ALL hope was gone.
Otherwise, starting over with a replacement plant might be the easiest route.

But, if you noticed that your plant still seemed to have a decent set of healthy roots, then I'd start as you have done, by removing any unhealthy tissue above and below soil level, and then repotting in new medium - so far so good.

Next, I would be sure to keep the pot in warm conditions (you don't say what part of the world you are in, so that might be indoors, or even with supplemental heat).
I would also get it into a location (indoors or out) where it receives good bright light - though NOT into direct sun for a little while ... but, if the recovery process goes well, and you begin to see some strong growth, then you can start to ease the plant into more and more light (gradually, so as not to sunburn the new foliage).
Remember, Strelitzia is used as a landscape plant in tropical zones where it grows well in sun.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily water on a schedule, that can tend to stress a plant by fluctuating between wet and dry conditions ... a healthy BOP may tolerate that well enough, but your poor little guy is on life-support in the plant ICU.
Instead of a schedule, I would get into the habit of frequently checking the soil's moisture by poking my finger into the dirt about an inch or so deep, and then strive to maintain a level of moisture that doesn't feel either wet OR dry, it should almost feel like a moisture level that would feel good on your bare feet (if you know what I mean ).

And, of course, NO fertilizer, just the nutrition that is in the new potting medium is going to be plenty for a while - your baby needs to stay on a diet until it is well on the road to recovery.
