Bird Of Paradise

staking bird of paradise - 2008/09/15 14:52 I was recently given a spectacular bird of paradise. The stems are about 5 feet long, and there are about 20 of them. It is in a pot that looks pretty small given the size of the plant. I plan to repot it into something much bigger, but in the meantime, the stems were mostly horizontal. I decided to tie some of them to a bamboo stake using tomato ties (like nylon stockings). These did not damage the stems, but many of the stems bent over above the tie, creating a sharp crease in the stem. I tied them very high on the stem, but the weight of the leaf seems to pull them down.

So, is it wrong to stake a bird of paradise, or are these stems weak for some reason? I need to contain the plant somehow, because once i take it inside, I don't have a 10-foot area for it to live in. Also, do I need to cut the stems that have bent? I think more than half of the approx 20 stems are bent now.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Re:staking bird of paradise - 2008/09/16 04:22 Hi CW, welcome.

I have a question, do you know if this plant has been recently divided or transplanted?
Or maybe it's been subjected to some other sort of stress?

I'm just wondering if any of these things may be at the root ( so to speak) of these bending stems.

If the foliage with the broken stalks is still green,
then I probably would not remove it.

Perhaps, instead of trying to stake each stem individually, you could temporarily create something more on the order of a "cage" around the plant, tall enough to surround and support the leaves as well as the stems?
I've seen some pretty tall, ready-made wire tomato cages that might serve the purpose pretty well.
Or you could design something that wouldn't be too unatractive ... just to help your plant until it can regain enough strength to support itself.

Also, just a thought about repotting -
Strelitzia actually is naturally suited to being quite rootbound.
My own potted specimen has so overgrown it's pot, that the heavy plastic pot is deformed and beginning to look as if it will soon tear apart.
I will HAVE to repot it this year, but I really hate to do it, because the plant blooms SO much more heavily when it looks painfully potbound.

Re:staking bird of paradise - 2008/09/16 05:48 The stress is probably that the plant was moved from it's long time home, in the back of a car, to my back yard. I think it's in the same pot, but the transportation and the new location have likely stressed it. So do people typically stake these plants?

I will try something surrounding it, although it will have to be as tall as the plant to be effective. It's interesting that they like to be rootbound. I guess I won't repot it this year in addition to the other stressors.

Thanks so much for your advice.
