I'd love to be able to help you figure this out.
The first thing that occurs to me, in reading your description,
is Crinum ... does this (CLICK HERE) resemble the plant you are asking about?
Hippeastrum and Amaryllis also come to mind ...
Of course,  there are many other possibilities as well,
so a photo would be most helpful, but if that isn't possible,
perhaps you can add a bit more information about this plant?
What does the flower itself look like?
How tall does it grow?
What season of the year does it bloom?
You say it is hardy, and I see that you are in OZ,
but just how cold do the wintertime temperatures get where this plant grows?
