Tonight's Flower Question

First flower at home! help me please! - 2008/07/11 15:16 I got this flower for about 1 week ago, from ikea:

This the info note: My question is how often should I water it?
The note says"Give it nourishment once/month"
do they mean that I have to water it once time per month? or what do they mean with nourishment? perhaps something I have to buy from a flower-store!?

What should I do with these yellow leafs? should I cut them?
why is it happening? Is it dieing or what?

Thanx! Im completly new at this subject since we never had flower/plants at home!

Re:First flower at home! help me please! - 2008/07/12 03:17 Hello, and welcome.

This palm (often called "Areca Palm")
appreciates having it's soil kept moist,
but at the same time, do not let water stagnate in the pot,
or in the saucer beneath the plant - this can cause the roots to rot.

In my opinion, it is much better to check the moisture of the plant frequently
and to give it water when it needs it
rather than to water on a schedule of once or twice a week, for instance.

You can check the moisture in the pot by pushing
your fingertip into the soil to a depth of about 1 inch,
the soil should feel moist - not dry, and not wet.
Check each day, and water when necessary to maintain even moisture.

It will do very nicely in a location with bright, filtered sunlight
perhaps near a window where the sun shines in through a sheer curtain.

Those yellowing tips on some of the foliage
can be easily trimmed away to help keep your plant looking attractive.
A little of this is quite natural as the plant grows.
some of the older foliage may start to look shabby and can be removed altogether.
This does not mean that your plant is unhealthy -
unless the entire plant begins to take on a sickly appearance.

As for nourishment,
you might apply a general purpose liquid fertilizer once a month.
I imagine that any store which specializes in selling plants
will have one that is suitable.
Do not over-fertilize as this can lead to a build-up
of salts and minerals in the soil
which will affect the appearance and health of your palm.

I would also suggest that you take this plant outside once a month or so
and spray it all over with water from a garden hose,
this should help to keep the plant from becoming infested with spider mites
which do sometimes make a home in this sort of palm.
The mites flourish in the dry conditions inside the home.
If taking the palm outside for a monthy wash is not feasible,
a monthly shower in the bathroom will benefit it's condition.

Enjoy your new plant.
