Flower identity - 2008/06/23 00:40 Hiya! I'm new to gardening and home ownership and inherited this plant. It's gorgeous and I want to know how to transplant it, duplicate it, and make it last as long as possible! Anybody know what it is?

Re:Flower identity - 2008/06/23 03:26 Oh yah, and it stinks to high heaven! If you have any ideas of fragrant, early summer flowers to plant in the Northwest to help offset this carcass smell, I would be forever in your debt! Thanx!

Re:Flower identity - 2008/06/23 03:45 Hi Kimmi, welcome.

Your cool plant is Dracunculus vulgaris,
I don't think it will surprise you to learn
that one of it's common names is "Stink Lily".
The good news is that the smell doesn't usually last too long.

It's a spring bloomer, so when it's done,
you'll have to wait until next spring for more flowers.

Here is an article that I think you will enjoy -

I would transplant it when it is dormant,
and that will give you the opportunity to have a close look
at the tuber to determine if it looks like it can be divided
before replanting.

As to propagation,
it is either by division or by seed,
which can be collected after allowing it to ripen
and dry on the plant.

Another note about the seeds -
they should be planted prompty after being collected,
they lose viability quickly if stored.
