Re:I mean THIS plant - 2008/06/22 22:21 Hi alysiamcm,
I've read your other post about this plant, too.

I think I can answer both of your questions.

1. What is it?
It is Epiphyllum oxypetalum
sometimes called "Queen of the Night cactus".

2. Why didn't the bud open?

It almost certainly did, you just weren't there to see it.
This is a night-flowering species, and the flowers last just one night.
Mine doesn't begin to open it's buds until dark,
and they aren't fully open until around mid-night ...

By the next morning they have closed and wilted ...

Just think of some of the flowers that bloom for only one day, like daylilies,
this is the night-owl's version.

Re:I mean THIS plant - 2008/06/23 12:07 Wow Zuzu, that sure is a special species. A night flower is so "different" - one would think the sun is the 'force' behind their opening because light usually does that. This must be comparable to night-animals

Re:I mean THIS plant - 2008/06/23 17:48 Howdy do Aly,

That was one of the first plants my mother gave me. I know it as a Night Blooming Cereus. It has bloomed for me twice, but since the cat got a hold of it, I have not been able to get it to bloom again.

Re:I mean THIS plant - 2008/06/24 04:36 Thanks zuzu! I'm tickled with the response and now I will plan an overnight vigil with camera in hand. The pic you posted of this plant in a yard is your own Queen of the Night? How big is it and what is your Zone? The pic of the open bloom is also appreciated in case I nod off...

Re:I mean THIS plant - 2008/06/24 08:45 You are quite welcome A,
Yes these are photos of my own plant.
I live in USDA zone 8, so it is too cold here for my plant to stay outdoors in the winter months, it is actually a fairly small potted specimen in a hanging basket.

These are pretty rapid growers, but since my space is limited, I keep cutting mine back, and about every 3-5 years, I get rid of the old one, and keep a new one started from the cuttings.

My plant is the descendent of a cutting I took many years ago from a plant at my aunt's home in south Florida - hers was planted outside, and it was massive! She used to give parties on nights when it was blooming heavily - I remember seeing it covered with 100 or more flowers,
the scent was just incredible!

Aww! Sunnid, I'm so sorry that your kitty traumatized your plant,
they are pretty tough, I'll bet it will recover.
I find that mine blooms better if it gets several hours of morning sun.

It is unusual that it blooms so late, isn't it zwaluw?
It is pollinated by some species of moth
( I can't recall which) so night time works best for that.
