What is this flower? - 2008/06/16 04:30 Howdy do, I live in NC and purchased this plant from a flea market about 4 years ago. It comes back every year and produces a big red flower. I thought it was a form of hibiscus, but I am not sure. I recall the lady saying it was a Star of Jerusalem/Bethleham. Does anyone else have an idea?

The flower in your avatar could definitely be a Star of Bethlehem but I cannot see it all too clearly (not on your profilepage either)

What is this flower? - 2008/06/16 15:06 Thank you for the warm welcome. I will take a better picture on Wednesday. It won't have a flower, but you will be able to see the plant stalk and leaves.

What is this flower? - 2008/06/16 20:53 Hi sunnid007, Glad to meet you,
I also live in N.C. and I grow this too
so it's one I recognize on sight, even in a small pic.

You are right, it is Hibiscus coccineus,
an herbaceous perennial hardy to about zone 7, I believe.
The common names by which I know it are
"Scarlet Rose Mallow" or "Texas Star Hibiscus".

What is this flower? - 2008/06/23 17:41 That's IT!! I have been very pleased with this plant. This is the tallest (close to 6 feet) it has ever grown, my mother and sister were able to start several plants from seeds. Thank you very much.
