I CUT ONE OPEN
Unknown Flowering Plant

night blooming flower - 2008/04/27 22:37 I have some plants in my garden of which I do not know the name. They look like lilies but the long straplike leaves are very unruly. Instead of being upright they mostly flop on the ground, growing to different lengths. The beauty of this plant is the spectactular flowerhead which is produced once, after flowering the whole plant dies. The flowers open up after sunset and are fully open befor 11p.m. Borne on one stalk, there can be between 5 to 7 individual flowers which have the typical lily shape. The colour of the petals is white with one dark purple stripe in the middle of each petal right up to the apex. The scent is strong and sweet when several plants flower at the same time otherwise it is not too noticeable. In the morning all flowers have become limp. A few days later the flowerstalk joins the leaves on the ground and starts developing green berries which in full time will produce a new plant. The root is a tuber. I hope this description is enough for someone to please identify it for me.

night blooming flower - 2008/04/28 20:38 Sorry, no picture available now. I will have to wait until the next one flowers. The last one has already collapsed and is not much to look at for identification. I shall be back, thanks.

Re:night blooming flower - 2008/05/01 17:59 It sounds absolutely beautiful,
I agree, a photo would certainly be most helpful.

There are parts of your description which immediately bring
Epiphyllum oxypetalum to mind.
It produces magnificent white, scented flowers at night,
which last only until the next day.
And it does have a form which could well be described as strappy.
Without support, it would certainly have a tendency to collapse, or sprawl ...
but, I have never known my plant to produce the green berries
which you describe, so I am just not sure,
perhaps that is due to your plant growing in a happier,
and more natural situation than my potted specimen?

Here are some pix of my plant in bloom, is this anything like your plant?
Or have I missed the mark completely?

The bud before opening - you can see the "strappy" stem/foliage:

Re:night blooming flower - 2008/05/01 20:01 This plant is gorgeous, especially the flower. But it is what we call a leaf cactus and prefers to grow down from trees. The segments of the leaves can be broken off and potted up to give you another plant. Unfortunately it is not what I am looking for but thanks a lot for for the interest and sharing the lovely pics.

Re:night blooming flower - 2008/05/01 21:25 Ah, yes I thought I might have it wrong ...
it was just the first thing that crossed my mind.

I do hope that you will post a photo of your plant the next time it flowers,
I am looking forward to seeing it and learning about it.

...it is what we call a leaf cactus and prefers to grow down from trees. The name "Leaf Cactus" is a very good name for this.
I most often see it called "Night Blooming Cereus" or
"Queen of the Night".
When I lived in Florida, the climate was warm enough to grow it in the trees, as you say,
but here where I live now, the winter months are too cold,
so this (and all of my Epiphyllums) are confined to pots.

Re:night blooming flower - 2008/05/02 20:06 To mind comes a tallish moss cone anchored to a suitable base. Then you can attach the epiphyllum right at the top so it can grow down, fill the rest of the cone with other epiphytes (orchids come to mind) and you might have a most spectacular display in your home.

Re:night blooming flower - 2008/07/04 17:46 Many of the descriptions I see here are close to describing a plant I have which was given to me and called a night-blooming cereus. I live in Florida and this thing is in a pot. I received it for Christmas 2006 and the first time it bloomed for me was October 2007. Since then it's had multiple buds/blooms in March 2008, June 2008 and I now have buds appearing again. I am enclosing photos and hope someone can tell me exactly what this thing is. I love it because it is so prolific yet ugly. My mother-in-law gave it to me and hers does not bloom like mine and looks healthier.

Re:night blooming flower - 2008/07/04 19:26 Hiya dejavue52,
"Night-Blooming Cereus" is one of the names by which
Epiphyllum oxypetalum is commonly called.
It has smooth, strappy "leaves" (actually modified stems),
as you can see in my first pic, above.

There is another night-bloomer with a similar flower,
Selenicereus grandiflorus (CLICK HERE to see a pic)
the plant has a more typical cactus-like appearance.
