Can someone identify this? - 2008/04/01 01:37 This flower is growing in my sister-in-laws back yard in Georgia. It didn't bloom last year as far as we can tell (this is the first full year in the house) but she did clean up the beds and trim back the dead leaves at the end of last year. Any thoughts?

Callie

I can't seem to get the picture to post. Sorry

Can someone identify this? - 2008/04/01 19:09 Hi Callie,
sorry you had problems loading your pic,
I'd be happy to try to help you ID it.
If you have it in an online album maybe you could post a link to it?

Or maybe the file is too large to load here,
reducing the size a bit would help in that case ?

I'm only guessing ...

Ah, very pretty!

Yes, I do recognize that Callie,
it is Kniphofia Uvaria ("Red-Hot Poker Plant"),
definitely a keeper!

They need to be in full sun to grow and bloom well,
so the clearing out that your SIL did may have really helped,
and it may have also provided some much needed root space.

They aren't picky about soil types, except that
it should be well-drained,
otherwise crown rot can occur.

They can survive periods of drought,
but will do better if they get water during hot, dry weather.

Kniphofia can form large colonies over time.
