Pruning tetrapanax - 2008/03/06 19:17 This is just to ask if anyone with more experience than me with tetrapanax papyrifera can advise on pruning/ cutting down.

I planted a tetrapanax about 5 years ago and it has grown very well in our small garden( close to the river in the north of England ). It has in a sense grown too well and not been cut down by frosts in the winter as expected.Although I love the plant , or should I say tree!, need to cut it down a bit as it's in a restricted space . It is now a small tree with a single trunk about 6-10 cm diameter and height 2 metres. Leaves die away most years and new ones come through.

Will cutting the trunk down to the ground kill the plant or will it give out new shoots , which is the aim , in this way reverting to a shrub?

Any advice greatly welcomed. Ian

Pruning tetrapanax - 2008/03/08 13:30 Hello Ianbutler, welcome to the forum I hope you will like it here

I find it extremely hard finding information about cutting off the trunk of your Tetrapanax papyriferus

Therefore I can only say what I would do and that is not to do it. Try trimming it instead of cutting the trunk. That seems like such a dramatic measure I just can't believe it is good for the tree.
