zinnias - 2008/01/21 02:15 i recently posted a picture and had a flower identified (thanks zuzu). It is called zinnia elegans aka benary's giant coral. I found places to buy seeds but is it possible that there are any suppliers that grow such flowers for sale. excuse my ignorance but i figured i would ask.

thanks

zinnias - 2008/01/21 13:12 gjack, where are you located? I would logically think that there would be growers of these flowers, but it would make it a lot easier to know where to look closeby you.

Re:zinnias - 2008/01/21 23:54 Just wondering if you are looking for cut flowers,
or if you are looking for plants to grow yourself?

If you are looking for cut flowers,
then I would approach a local florist and see if they can order them for you.

If you want to grow the plants yourself, but you don't want to start from seed,
then try contacting the manager of a local nursery, and tell them that you'd like to purchase seedling plants.
They may be able to order them from their supplier, or they may even sow the seeds and grow them to seedling stage for you, themselves.
I've had the best luck getting "special" plants by cultivating a good relationship with local nursery employees and managers.
Privately owned nurseries are much more likely to provide this kind of service than the larger/chain store ones, and the sooner you get in your request, the better . . . once the season really starts to get busy for them, the more likely they are to have to say "Sorry, but no-can-do".

But, let me add this, if you are just nervous about growing your own from seed,
Zinnias are some of the best plants to grow from seed.
They really are a great plant for novice growers to start with.
A handful of seeds scattered in early summer in a sunny location
(or on top of a good-sized pot of soil in a sunny spot),
patted in gently, and very lightly covered with a tiny bit more soil,
will likely bring you lots of flowers all season long,
and all you'll really have to do is keep them watered.
