Huge GORGEOUS Red Flowering Tree - 2008/01/08 04:26 I was recently was in Nicaragua in the mountains. I saw the most beautiful red flowering large tree. It is not Royal Poinciana since I have looked at pictures of this tree.
The Red Flowers are a True deep red and are quite large about the size of a hibiscus. I have a purple orchid tree and this red tree had similar flowers. Even from a distance you could see the large blooms on stems that had several blossoms and maybe 1 or more that hadn't opened yet. The spreading tree appeared to be at least 30 feet or more in height. A luscious tree that I would like to own, but need the name.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re:Huge GORGEOUS Red Flowering Tree - 2008/01/08 07:52 Hi Carol ~
I don't know if this is what you saw in Nicaragua,
but I do know that Spathodea campanulata
("African Tulip Tree" or "Flame of the Forest")
is a very spectacular tree that has been introduced to that country.

Maybe this is what you saw:

As lovely as it is, I think it is considered an invasive species there.

Re:Huge GORGEOUS Red Flowering Tree - 2008/01/08 17:23 Thanks for the picture. The flowers in Nicaragua seemed to be entirely deep gorgeous red , but I saw it from a distance and this tree could be the tree. I see the seeds on ebay. This is the most amazing tree. I am already very thankful for this forum. Thanks for your response, Carol

growing in south Florida, where I lived for many years,
and also in Haiti, where my family lived for several years when I was a girl.

They are breathtaking when in full bloom,
they are completely covered in flowers,
almost no foliage can be seen!

Flower color can range from a relatively rare yellow to nearly crimson.

But they also have some drawbacks, as a landscaping choice.
They grow quite large and need a good deal of space,
they also create deep shade, which makes planting beneath them difficult.
As I recall, when all those flowers fall,
their accumulation creates a rather slimey mess, unless kept raked up.

And, they are prone to brittleness, and frequently suffer damage
from harsh winds - if you live in a location prone to storms.

Oh - and, alas it is one of the plants included
in the top "100 of the World's Worst Invasive Alien Species"
at the Global Invasive Species Database.

I'm really not trying to talk you ot of it . . . honest,
it's just always best to know what we're getting into . . .
*LOL* . . . or is it????

Re:Huge GORGEOUS Red Flowering Tree - 2008/01/08 23:24 Thanks to all. The additional info picture showed the plant in full bloom with leaves. The tree I saw had leaves covered with flowers. The site says the tree blooms without leaves. Kind of confusing. Maybe it depends on the winter temp. Help again, Carol
