Help identifying Hawaiian flower? - 2011/01/19 18:20 Hi, I hope this forum can help my friend.

She's volunteering on the Big Island this winter working on an organic farm. They keep bees and she's a beekeeper in MN during the other months of the year (smart girl, wintering in Hawaii, eh?).

Anyway, she's noticed that her Hawaiian bees have been flocking on these flowers in the garden outside the house that the volunteers stay at and she along a small photo to show me. She'd like to learn more about this flower to understand the nectar flow, etc.

Can anyone identify this flower (taken with an iPod camera so the quality isn't high). Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If I have got this right, this is the flower that you are asking about?

This is a species of Portulaca (they are often called "moss roses" where I live).
There are several species and numerous named cultivars of Portulaca, but from the photo I can't be more specific.

I hope that helps.

** OH! And yeah, your friend is a VERY smart girl to be wintering in HI!! I'm green with envy!
Hope she's loving every minute of it.
