Hi again all.
With the help of a very heavy volume belonging to a friend, I'm pleased to report we've now identified the climber/ vine; it's a campsis radicans. Probably not very tropical in terms of most users of this Board, but quite exotic/ unusual to this ignoramus on the South Coast of England, I can assure you.
Anyway, thanks to anyone who gave my message even the briefest attention and good luck with your tropical flowers.
Confused no more.................
