ID this guy - 2009/11/11 02:55 Please help me id this. Not even sure it's tropical, but it sure looks it...

The image only shows the flowers, but the leaves are very long (up to about 2 feet long), and each are 2-3" wide. The leaves are very dark green and shiny. The flowers grow in these clusters.

The lovely flowering plant in your photo is a Clivia
(most likely Clivia miniata).
They are natives of the African continent,
and I think that they would be properly classified as sub-tropicals,
in that they can tolerate some chilly (though probably not freezing) weather,
in fact, they will bloom more reliably if they receive 3-6 weeks of cool weather over the winter months.
Another point - like many of their relatives in the Amaryllidaceae group, they do great in containers, and will bloom best if the container is rather snug.
