The plant in your fist pic is Caesalpinia pulcherrima, it goes by quite a few "common" names, including "Pride of Barbados", "Dwarf Poinciana", "Red Bird of Paradise", "Mexican Bird of Paradise" ... and I'm sure there are several others. *lol*
And the second photo that you posted is of Gloriosa rothschildiana, commonly called "Gloriosa Lily" or "Glory Lily".

I can't actually direct you to a particular book, but since you made your trip to Hawaii, maybe this site could be helpful to you: http://www.hear.org/starr/plants/ It's one that I sometimes use when trying to get an ID sorted out.
