Anyone know the name of this weird plant? - 2009/06/05 23:56 It only grows and blooms in water; does nothing when put in potting soil like normal plants. Weirdest plant I've ever seen, but it has pretty, aromatic star-shaped flowers. Anyone know its name?

Re:Anyone know the name of this weird plant? - 2009/06/06 04:04 Hello, and welcome.

Your plant is a Hoya.
Funny that it does not do well for you in soil,
I grow several species of Hoya -
ALL of which grow and bloom very well, in soil.

Here is one of mine, photo taken back in March

and one of the flower clusters

As you can see, they can grow to be quite large and lush.
If you reconsider trying to grow your plant in soil
there are some good rooting and potting instructions here: http://www.myhoyas.com/rooting.htm
(of course, you don't need the rooting instructions,
you've done that part of the job most admirably )

And remember, once planted in soil,
these plants do not take kindly to being over-watered,
as strange as that may seem, given it's watery history.

Re:Anyone know the name of this weird plant? - 2009/06/06 19:09 Thanks for the info, zuzu. Very surprising to hear it doesn't like to be overwatered, especially since mine has lived in water for over two whole years and has bloomed several times a year! I must have a very unusual variety. I first got the cutting from a woman who used to work with a friend who had hers in soil and she said hers had *never* bloomed at all in several years. She was shocked to hear that mine had bloomed from just a small cutting in water so quickly after she'd given it to me. I tried putting it in a pot of soil last summer, but it just sat there all summer, fall, *and* winter without changing one single bit. I got frustrated and pulled it up and put it back into a jar of just plain water this spring, and within a couple weeks, it started blooming again! Told you it was one weird plant!

Re:Anyone know the name of this weird plant? - 2009/06/07 04:10 *LOL* Well, I'm not one to argue with success,
you and your special Hoya seem to have an understanding that works well for you both.

I'm a seat-of-the-pants grower myself, so I have found (on more that one occasion) that breaking the "rules" can sometimes yield wonderful results.
The main thing is that you clearly enjoy your plant, and it shows every sign that it is quite content as it is.

It truly does make a very attractive windowsill display,
well done.
