Help !! can anybody id ? - 2009/05/03 03:15This showed up in my sisters garden in NJ and we are trying to figure out what it is and if it needs any special care ..can anybody help? (we're pretty sure its not native to NJ..lol)

Your sister's plant is a Fritillaria imperialis (possibly the cultivar named 'Rubra Maxima') - commonly called "Crown Imperial Fritillaria". A location in sun and sandy/well-drained soil yields best performance. They require average water supply. This is a spring-blooming bulb (like Tulips or Daffodils), so allow the foliage to run it's full course after the plant finishes flowering. Do not remove the foliage until it has dried out and withered, it will feed the bulb for next year's display.
