Re:purple beach flower? - 2009/02/07 02:24
Well, you certainly do live in a wonderful place to get to know all about many marvelous plants. I don't mind telling you that I am a little envious, especially at this time of the year.
I'm sure that you will be able to help many of the people who visit this site with their questions about plant identities as well as care tips for their tropicals.
By the way do you know any websites that helps identify plants by description? If not i am glad I am part of this forum now..... I don't know of any particular site - 'though there may be one, but I have found that most gardening forums have some very knowledgable members who are happy to help with identification questions.
Photos, of course, are a most helpful tool, but a really accurate description can sometimes be enough.
When I am searching for the identity of a plant that I don't immediately recognize, I try searching using key words - for instance, with this one, I could immediately see that this was a member of the Morning Glory family so I knew the genus was Ipomoea, what I wanted to know was if I could figure out the species - From your photo, I could see that it likes to grow on the beach, so ( if I remember correctly) I did my search using the key words "Morning Glory" + "Beach" and I was lucky enough to have an immediate hit.
Often, a plant's common name (as in this case) is almost guess-able.
