HAWAIIAN TREE - NEED NAME - 2008/08/12 04:41 Oh, well. I posted it to the wrong spot, so here I go again! I've tried for two years to learn the name of this plant/tree. My sister was in Maui in February 2006 and picked up these seed pods from the grounds around her hotel. She sent some to me. The pods are 7-8 inches long, hard, dark brown, containing oval seeds that are also very hard. The seeds are a shiny dark brown. I scored some and planted them in Pittsburgh, but when I brought the plants indoors in Sept., they dropped leaves and died. The stem is woody, the leaves slightly boomerang-shaped. Sort of like Mimosa/Acacia or Black Locust leaf clusters, but the leaf shape is different. I've moved to NC and planted a seed after scoring it and letting it soak for 48 hours. It sprouted and is about 14 inches tall. I've spent weeks trying to name it; contacted the agricultural ext serv in Hawaii - tried business contacts from Hawaii -- all with no luck. Can someone tell me what this plant is so that i can go online and learn about it? Thank you!

HAWAIIAN TREE - NEED NAME - 2008/08/13 02:18 Hi Grammie629,
I don't recognize the tree that you describe,
but the link below will take you to a page of photos
at the Plants of Hawaii site,
a truly wonderful resource.

Plants of Hawaii - Fabaceae family <-- Click

The site is extremely comprehensive, covering thousands of plants, all divided according to species or family.

From what you have described,
I think that the Fabaceae family sounds like a good place to start the search.
Just scroll though the photos (click to enlarge)
and maybe you will recognize your tree.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
